For 2023, I’ve rounded up my favorite family vacation ideas, along with some suggestions from fellow travel writers. From coast to coast, we’re here to help you find the best family vacation spots in the US!
On this list, you’ll find a variety of family vacation ideas, some of which are famous destinations you’ve probably heard of before. Other destinations are places that are new to you. Some are big cities, some are small towns. For each vacation destination on the list, I’ve listed why it works for families, as well as recommended places or things to do to start planning!

The cost of a family vacation depends on many factors. Are you traveling or flying? Do you plan to visit many attractions with an entrance fee, or do you mostly do things for free? And where do you live? A five-star resort is more expensive than staying at a budget motel.

There are many factors that determine how long a family vacation should last. Some studies recommend taking eight days off to get the full benefit of your vacation time.
But some families may be limited by the number of days you can take off from work or school. Hotels and food also add up quickly, so a longer vacation means spending more money on travel.
For our family, we usually plan our main family vacation around seven or eight days depending on the travel time. If we have a long drive on the first day, we may need an extra day to get a feel for the destination.

While all-inclusives are popular in the Caribbean (see our fun stay at Jamaica’s Moon Palace), it’s not as common in the United States. There are many all-inclusive resorts in the US that welcome families. Note that only a few have all-inclusive package options that you can choose to add to your booking.

The US offers states with amazing national parks (like Montana and California), others with amazing beaches on oceans or lakes (like Florida or Michigan), and states with excellent historical education opportunities (like D.C. and Alabama).

One of our family’s favorite trips is a trip down the California coast. We are all in love with Northern California. The towering redwood trees in Redwood National and State Parks are simply stunning. And there are plenty of family-friendly tours that will take you deep into this giant.

Glass Beach at Fort Bragg is a unique location for family photos! Nearby McKerricher State Park invites kids to get outside, explore and enjoy nature. And, you can even spot whales at the right time!
Northern California also has Lassen Volcano National Park, where kids can experience crazy thermal activity and beautiful waterfall adventures.

Estes Park, Colorado is a great vacation destination for families looking for National Park tours with small town charm and big city tours. Estes Park is home to Rocky Mountain National Park, one of Mia’s favorite parks. It is full of exciting journeys, beautiful scenery and wildlife.
Estes Park is a quaint main street town with lots of tourist shops, including some great candy and ice cream shops. They also have a fun pika hunt that will keep the kids entertained while you stroll down the main street.
When you’re ready for some big-city fun, head to Denver. It takes about an hour and a half and is the best way to enjoy nature and city views. If you have NFL fans, they can also book a Broncos Stadium tour.

One of my picks for the best family vacation spots in the US is Oahu. It’s home to Honolulu, the island of Hawaii, but offers more for families to explore. If you want to experience the beauty of Hawaii, Oahu is the place to find it.

Most major airlines fly through Honolulu, making it easy to get to the island, so east coasters looking to avoid a long flight may want to make a short stopover in California.
Our favorite things to do on Oahu are climbing the Diamond Head Monument, walking around the island, eating a plate of shrimp and enjoying some shaved ice.
