For the full Lake Tahoe summer experience, you should go after Memorial Day and before Labor Day. One time we went to Tahoe for Memorial Day weekend and it snowed! If you don’t like 80 degree days, come earlier in the summer. Unfortunately, thanks to global warming, the temperature in Tahoe rises every summer, but it’s still similar to the rest of California with cooler mornings and evenings. So don’t forget the layers.

I usually want to find a place to stay within 30 minutes of most of our activities so we can spend more time exploring instead of driving. If you want to have a good time in Tahoe, consider splitting your time between the North and South lakes – the whole lake is really worth seeing! – Plan your activities accordingly.
We know it’s hard to plan an itinerary when there’s so much to do. That’s why we’ve rounded up all of our favorite things to do with dogs that we enjoyed (and warned you about) during our week in Lake Tahoe.
Emerald Bay is located 12 miles north of South Lake Tahoe. There is no transport access to the lake, but there are several viewing platforms and trails. The location is perfect for watching the amazing sunset and there is free parking close to the view.
You should arrive around 19:00 to see the sunset. This is a great photo time to capture the sun setting behind the trees, then sit on a bench and watch the colors change in the sky as the sun approaches 8:20pm.

Summer hiking and boating are some of the best dog activities in Tahoe. AllTrails also has a great interactive map that shows all the dog-friendly trails around Lake Tahoe, so it’s easy to find the trails closest to where you live or pick a list to hike. We did all of our hiking in South Lake and loved all the routes we chose.
I usually look for easy to moderate hikes that don’t take more than 3 hours. We mostly like to walk in the morning, so this fits Ruby’s regular morning walks, which usually allow us to avoid the crowds and provide good lighting and photos. After doing some research on AllTrails and several Tahoe blogs, I took these hikes on the first few days of our trip to South Tahoe.
The Fallen Leaf Leaf Trail is a loop trail near South Lake Tahoe. This trek is usually considered moderately difficult, but we found it relatively easy. There are a few wooden fences and a couple of inclines along the way, but the trail is relatively clear and flat. The trails are mostly dirt with rock formations, so you have to keep track of your feet.

It’s a very popular tourist destination, so you’ll likely meet others as you explore. The trail is open year-round and can be visited at any time, even if the road is not plowed in winter. We met many dogs on the walk and every now and then a few came out.
To access the trail, you must pay a 10-day user fee at Fallen Leaf Lake Campground entrance. The ranger gives you a tag to hang on your dashboard, then you turn around and head down the road to the left of the day parking lot entrance. The parking lot is half a mile down the road and you’ll find it just past the trailhead on the left. There are about 20 sites in the day use area and there is a trail ahead where you can intersect with the main road.
The route starts with beautiful views of the lake, from where you can walk to the beach. Many dogs went there to get water. There are a few benches along the way if you want to sit and enjoy the view, and on the way back we noticed many tourists heading towards the water to vacate their spots at midnight.
If you continue the path to the left, it weaves along the edge of the lake, offering contrasting views of the lake and landscape, as well as some shady spots. The first 1.5 miles of the course are generally well marked. I recommend using AllTrails to stay on the trail, we took a little more detours and wandered through some very uncharted terrain that was open forest.

AllTrails says this hike usually takes an hour, but we spent two hours with photo stops and our little adventure at the end.
Take plenty of water for you and your dog and pack all your belongings. It’s worth noting that there are no trash cans in this area, not even on the trail, so be prepared to pick up whatever your dog leaves behind.
